Commanders kicker Austin Seibert choked up after missing a game-clinching extra point in Sunday's last-minute 34-26 loss to the NFC East rival Cowboys.
“I just want to play better for my teammates. I never want to do that,” Seibert said tearfully in the locker room after Washington's third straight loss. “My hitting wasn't very good, but it means a lot to me to be here with these guys, so I want to do my best moving forward.”
With 21 seconds left and Washington trailing by seven points, Commanders quarterback Jaden Daniels connected with wideout Terry McLaurin for a miraculous 86-yard touchdown to cut the deficit to 27-26.
Seibert, who had missed the past two games with a right hip injury, missed the extra point that would have tied the game and put his hands on his helmet in disbelief.
Seibert had previously missed an extra point after Washington led 9-3 in the third quarter. Seibert also missed a 51-yard field goal in the first quarter with Washington leading 3-0.
Shortly after Seibert returned an onside kick 43 yards for a touchdown with 14 seconds left and missed his second extra point, Cowboys safety Juannie Thomas shook up the game for Dallas, ending Dallas' losing streak at five. I stopped it.
Seibert was asked about the low snap before missing the extra point and took responsibility.
“[The snap] There was no difference at all. That’s my responsibility,” he said.
Commanders coach Dan Quinn seemed shocked after the failure, but had no interest in going for two at the time.
The Commanders (7-5) will host the Tennessee Titans (3-8) on Dec. 1 before Washington's bye week.
