In a sign of his confidence in the Springbok system, Rassie Erasmus made 10 changes to his starting XI, including first starts for scrum-half Morne van den Berg and lock Ruan Nortje. Aphelele Fassi will move to fullback and be part of a back three that also includes Cheslin Kolbe and Makazole Mapimpi. Jesse Kriel will retain his outside-centre position, partnering Lukhanyo Am, who will wear the number 12 jersey for a rare occasion.
“From the beginning of this season we have been clear that one of our main objectives is to develop squad depth with an eye towards the next Rugby World Cup in Australia,” Erasmus said. “We believe there is no better way to test our younger players and assess where we are as a team, especially away from home against a top-flight team.”
“We have around 45 players in our squad this season and we have seen what most of them are capable of. We have full confidence in our developing younger generation of players and feel now is the perfect opportunity to test them against an Australian team who will be desperate to bounce back from last weekend’s loss.

Although the weather is awful, unlikely for Perth – it’s been raining all day, there are strong winds and there are some puddles on the field – there is every chance South Africa can get back to their normal groove tonight and avoid the free-for-all of last weekend.
The Springbok walkover prediction today had to be revised during the week when coach Rassie Erasmus announced that a hypothetical “B” team would sing the South African national anthem.

Boasting an unbeaten record under new coach Joe Schmidt and a proud history at Fortress Suncorp, Australia were quietly confident they could flex their newfound strength in a hard-fought match against world champions South Africa. But a near-total 33-7 defeat by the Springboks will leave a deep scar on the Wallabies.
Ineffective in attack, crumbling in defence and embarrassed at set pieces, the Wallabies were given a painful lesson in rugby fundamentals by Rachie Erasmus’ Springboks and looked every bit the favourites for ninth place against the heavyweight champions of rugby. The worst part was that the score was against both teams and South Africa were far from their best.
