Australian Dollar drops near 0.7100 as April sees an increase in Unemployment Rate

AUD/USD drops to nearly 0.7100 as Powell boosts demand for the Dollar.

Australian Dollar Declines After Weak Labor Market Data

The AUD/USD pair dropped after a more than 0.5% increase the previous day, trading around 0.7120 during Thursday’s Asian session. The decline in the Australian dollar came on the heels of disappointing labor market statistics from Australia.

Australia’s unemployment rate climbed to 4.5% in April, up from 4.3% in March, surpassing market expectations that anticipated stability at 4.3%. Additionally, employment decreased by 18,600 positions in April following a revised gain of 23,000 jobs in March, which itself fell short of the projected 17,500 jobs increase.

This unanticipated rise in unemployment, combined with the net job loss, hints that the labor market may be cooling off due to the recent interest rate hike. Traders might soon reconsider their expectations for any further rate increases from the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA).

In another report, S&P Global noted that the preliminary Australian Manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) for May fell to 50.3, down from April’s 51.3. The services sector PMI showed an even sharper decline, dropping to 47.7 from 50.7, indicating contraction. Consequently, the overall PMI for May stood at 47.8, down from last month’s 50.4.

The Australian dollar is battling to maintain strength against the US dollar (USD), which remains robust as traders observe the economic implications of the US-Iran peace negotiations, alongside increasing tensions in the critical Strait of Hormuz shipping lane.

According to a Bloomberg report, US President Donald Trump stated that the discussions with Iran are nearing completion but reiterated his readiness to resume military action within days if his conditions are rejected. In response, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian remarked on social media that Iran has no intention of capitulating, claiming that any attempts to enforce surrender through force are merely fanciful illusions.
