Support for Snoop Dogg’s Performance in Australian Football Grand Final
Australian football officials have voiced their support for Snoop Dogg’s upcoming performance at the league’s grand final, despite some controversy surrounding the rapper’s recent remarks about LGBTQ representation in films, including those from Disney.
Andrew Dillon, the CEO of the Australian Football League (AFL), affirmed that Snoop’s scheduled appearance remains on track and expressed confidence that he will deliver an outstanding performance. “What we look forward to in the next four weeks are the nine most important games of the year,” Dillon mentioned in a media briefing. “Then we arrive on the last Saturday of September with the two best teams.”
Dillon added, “Grand Final Entertainment is part of what makes this event spectacular. It’s an experience that hasn’t been seen in a long time. He does an amazing job.” He dismissed concerns regarding Snoop’s past lyrics, which have drawn criticism from some in Australia who are eager to hold him accountable for what they perceive as “homophobic” language from years ago.
The AFL chief argued that Snoop Dogg has evolved as an artist and that the league cannot hold past lyrics against him. He further noted that the AFL wouldn’t have any artists perform if they scrutinized every song an artist has ever released.
There has been notable backlash against Snoop Dogg in Australia for a couple of reasons. One major point of contention arose when he commented on a podcast about feeling uncomfortable with a scene featuring a child and a lesbian couple in a Disney film. He recalled taking his grandson to the film, only to be faced with questions about how the two women could have children.
“I didn’t expect to have to explain that to my grandson,” Snoop said regarding the complexities of what he termed “radical gay politics.”
The second reason for the backlash is more immediate. Just days before Snoop’s comments, a top Australian football player faced a suspension due to allegations of homophobia. This context added fuel to calls for Snoop Dogg to face consequences for his remarks, especially given the heightened sensitivity surrounding LGBTQ issues in sports currently.
