Australian Lawmakers Enshrine ‘Protection’ for LGBTQI+ People

Left-wing MPs in the Australian state of Queensland have introduced a bill that would “provide stronger protections for transgender, gender diverse and intersex people.”

The state’s discrimination laws were amended at the end of April, providing LGBTQI+ advocates with a range of protections against “discrimination and defamation,” while “intersex people” are similarly treated differently and given protection. You can expect to receive the following.

press machine release A statement from the Queensland Human Rights Commission revealed the changes initiated by the state’s far-left Labor government, detailing the following provisions:

Protections against gender identity discrimination and defamation have been in place since 2002, but the new law is clearer and more comprehensive. That is:

  • Non-binary or gender diverse individuals will now be protected from discrimination in Queensland, in line with many laws across Australia
  • Discrimination based on gender expression, such as name, dress, speech, or behavior, is not permitted.

From April 29th, under the Anti-Discrimination Act, “gender identity” means a person who:

    • Inner experience of gender, regardless of gender assigned at birth
    • the sensations of their bodies, any modifications made to their bodies, and
    • Other expressions of gender, such as names, clothing, speech, and actions.

The new law will apply from April 29, 2024.

While “obsolete language” will be specifically targeted, “a new attribute, ‘sexual characteristics’, will be added to the law to protect the intersex community from discrimination and vilification.”

The new law will include a person’s claimed gender, reproductive organs, chromosomes, genes, hormones, and physical characteristics related to the changes that occur during puberty.

The move follows the introduction of similar laws in other parts of the world.

As Breitbart News reported, last September, California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) signed an LGBTQI+-friendly bill a day after vetoing a transgender custody bill.

“I am committed to our continued efforts to create safer and more inclusive spaces for all Californians,” Newsom said.

Additionally, Newsom signed A bill that would prohibit schools from banning books about LGBTQI+ topics. This means California will fine schools that violate the law.
