Australian sailor discovered deceased in suspected pirate assault on yacht near South Africa

Deirdre “Cookie” Sibley, an Australian seafarer, and her crew have been found dead under mysterious circumstances on their yacht off the South African coast.

While sailing near Madagascar, Sibley and her French companion Pascal issued a distress signal on Thursday. By the time local authorities reached them, sadly, both were discovered deceased on board.

These were seasoned sailors. Sibley’s family, particularly her sister Sue Good, is now left seeking answers, holding concerns that piracy may have played a role.

“She was adventurous and loved the outdoors. Sailing and the ocean were central to her life,” Good shared.

The duo had met on Réunion Island in June, preparing for a journey across the Mozambique Channel to Durban, where Sibley planned to fly home.

“They were really living their adventure; it must have been an incredible experience for her,” Good reflected.

“All we understand is that they were found dead on the yacht, with no idea of how it all occurred,” she continued, expressing confusion over how something like this could happen to two people who were pursuing their passion.

Good mentioned that the Mozambique Channel isn’t exactly a safe sailing route, a fact Sibley was aware of.

As of Friday, the yacht remained adrift while officials arranged for its recovery.

Friends took to social media to honor Sibley, calling her “the ultimate adventurer who never settled.”

One friend described her as someone who embraced life wholeheartedly, pursuing every chance with enthusiasm for exploration and joy.

“She was an exceptional bonus mother, a devoted teacher, an ocean advocate, and a skilled sailor. I cherished every moment spent with her,” a friend added.

Many recalled her as a fantastic aquatic instructor and a wonderful individual.
