Surfer Rescued After Going Missing in New South Wales
A surfer who disappeared while out on the ocean was found safe on a small island about eight miles from where his belongings were discovered in New South Wales, Australia. The 19-year-old, identified as Darcy Diffholtz, was reported missing on Wednesday after he did not return home.
According to the New South Wales Police, Diffholtz had left his home on his bike, aiming for Wool Beach around 2:30 PM. When he didn’t come back, his family grew concerned and alerted authorities, prompting search efforts around Uri Beach.
Search and rescue operations continued through the night until around 1 AM Thursday. By the following morning, search teams located him on North Solitary Island. This came as a relief to his family. His father, Terry Diffholtz, expressed his disbelief upon hearing the news, saying, “That’s a bit surreal. I was thinking about the absolute worst. I didn’t give up hope, but hey, I was nearby.”
It appears that Darcy may have ventured too far on his surfboard, making it difficult for him to return. Family member Melissa Smith remarked on his resilience, suggesting he had likely found a safe spot. Unsurprisingly, his smartwatch and phone were left behind at home, but family believes he had his Malibu surfboard with him.
During the rescue operation that morning, conditions were surprisingly mild, causing some confusion among the search teams. Matthew McLennan, a Marine rescue skipper, remarked on the currents that might have contributed to the situation. Fortunately, Darcy was found unharmed but cold, and he was taken to a local hospital for assessment. He is reportedly in stable condition and is receiving support from his family.
