Federal Charges Against Florida Representative for Alleged Theft of FEMA Funds

A federal grand jury in Miami has indicted four individuals, including Florida Democratic Representative Sheila Cherfilus McCormick, for allegedly stealing millions from federal emergency funds.

According to federal prosecutors’ statement, Cherfilus McCormick reportedly misappropriated funds in support of her 2021 electoral campaign.

“It’s crucial that those in power are held accountable, especially when they exploit public funds for personal gain. We will ensure that justice is served,” a spokesperson emphasized in a press release.

The 46-year-old congresswoman has been charged alongside her 51-year-old brother, Edwin Cherfilus. The allegations include a scheme to artificially inflate payments to their family’s health insurance provider.

Additionally, Cherfilus McCormick is accused of engaging in a straw donation scheme with 46-year-old Nadège LeBlanc and filing a fraudulent federal tax return in 2021, assisted by tax preparer David K. Spencer, aged 41.

If convicted, Cherfilus McCormick could face up to 53 years in prison; her brother could be sentenced to 35 years, while LeBlanc and Spencer could face 10 and 33 years, respectively.

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi remarked on the severity of the crime, stating, “Using disaster relief funds for personal purposes is not just selfish; it’s a deep betrayal of public trust. We will thoroughly investigate this case.”

The congresswoman’s questionable campaign practices, allegedly involving hefty advertising expenses, had already drawn scrutiny prior to these indictments.

Additionally, she has been the focus of an ethics investigation by the House Ethics Committee, which was reaffirmed in July 2024, following an initial inquiry in January.

At that time, Cherfilus McCormick maintained her innocence, stating, “The Ethics Commission has yet to finalize its findings, and I trust the process. I’m committed to cooperating fully with the investigation.”
