Search Underway for Missing College Student in Vermont

Authorities in Vermont have initiated a large-scale search for Leah Purcell Smith, a 21-year-old student who has gone missing from Middlebury College.

In a statement, the college’s Vice President for Student Affairs, Smita Ruzicka, alongside Vice President for Safety, Demitria Kirby, indicated that they are coordinating with Smith’s family and friends to gather information about her recent activities and to offer support. This announcement was made via a social media post.

Leah, who hails from California, is a senior pursuing a double major in computer science and statistics. Beyond her studies, she was also a member of the women’s swimming and diving team at Middlebury.

Reportedly, she was last seen on campus around 9 p.m. on Friday night, making the situation increasingly concerning.

Sergeant Nathan Hayes from the Middlebury Police Department has urged students to report any details they might have about Leah’s last known whereabouts. “Even if you’re unsure whether the information is relevant,” he mentioned, it’s important to come forward.

According to police, Leah is described as being 5 feet 11 inches tall, weighing approximately 160 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes.

As the investigation continues, authorities are making use of drones to explore potential search areas, emphasizing the importance of community cooperation in locating her.
