Authorities Arrest Suspect Accused of Purchasing Mortars and Fireworks to Target Police During LA Riots

Charges Filed Against Texas Man for Alleged Explosive Plot

The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced on Wednesday that a Texas man is facing charges for allegedly intending to use explosives during a riot in Los Angeles. Grzegorz Vandenberg, 48, reportedly purchased mortars and fireworks from a store in New Mexico and claimed he wanted to kill law enforcement or government officials in Los Angeles, according to the DOJ.

Vandenberg is charged with transporting explosives with the aim of contributing to violent actions against Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE), a movement that began escalating on June 6. The DOJ stated that he told store employees about his intentions.

FBI Director Kash Patel expressed a strong message, saying, “If we come after law enforcement officers, the FBI will not spare any efforts to find you and lead you to justice.” He noted that Vandenberg allegedly planned to use explosives against officers in Los Angeles and, with assistance from the store employees who deleted his license plate, they were able to thwart his plans.

According to reports, Vandenberg purchased six mortars and fireworks, each holding 60 grams of gunpowder, and asked the clerk for the largest explosives available. He also claimed to be a former military officer with special forces training, suggesting he had knowledge of making pipe bombs.

If convicted, Vandenberg could face a maximum of 10 years in prison. However, it’s unclear if he has legal representation at this time.

In a related context, over 20 individuals involved in the Los Angeles riots have also been charged, as indicated by a DOJ prosecutor. During the riots, agitators were reportedly firing commercial-grade fireworks at police.

Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell remarked that “targeting law enforcement with violence is not a protest. It’s a crime,” underscoring the seriousness of such actions. He elaborated on incidents during the riots where projectiles and mortars were thrown at officers.

The message from authorities is clear: those who resort to violence against law enforcement will face repercussions.
