Manhunt Following Politically Motivated Assassination in Minnesota
The wife of a man believed to be involved in the assassination of former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband has been apprehended by police approximately 85 miles north of the Twin Cities. They found a vehicle filled with cash, passports, weapons, and ammunition during the stop.
Jennifer Belter, 51, from Green Isle, Minnesota, was taken into custody after law enforcement tracked the vehicle near Onamia, Minnesota. Reports indicate that three of Bolter’s relatives were also present, but no further details were released.
In the meantime, a significant manhunt is underway for Vance Leroy Bolter, 57, who is accused of shooting and killing Melissa and Mark Hortman in Brooklyn Park around 3:30 a.m. on June 14. There are suspicions that Bolter attempted to assassinate Democratic Senator John Hoffman and his wife just five miles away from the Hortman’s residence, though Hoffman survived the attack.
On June 15, police found Belter’s abandoned vehicle about 15 miles from Bolter’s home, containing a cowboy hat similar to one he was last seen wearing. Security footage captured Bolter shortly before the shootings around 6 a.m.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has condemned the incident, labeling it an act of political violence.
During the attack, it’s reported that Bolter wore a latex mask, disguising his appearance to look bald. He drove a black Ford SUV designed to resemble a police cruiser, complete with emergency lights.
After the incident involving Hoffman, police responded to the Hortman residence, where they encountered a man who identified Bolter. He reportedly fired at officers before fleeing through the back while abandoning the police-style SUV in the driveway.
Interestingly, items found in Belter’s SUV included a flyer with the phrase “There is no King,” likely referencing nationwide protests against former President Donald Trump on the same day. A list discovered in the vehicle reportedly contained names of up to 70 individuals, including political figures like Governor Walz, Hortman, and Hoffman.
Hortman, while serving as Speaker of the House during the 2023 legislative session, played a pivotal role in advocating for codified abortion rights, a stance that has sparked political contention in the state. She had previously been recognized for her opposition to efforts to ban same-sex marriage in Minnesota.
Vance Bolter held various positions, including roles on the Governor’s Workforce Development Committee. He and Jennifer operated Praetorian Guard Security Services, which appears to have fallen into disarray since their initial registration in 2018.
Belter’s professional endeavors extend to initiatives aimed at improving agriculture and fishing industries in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, emphasizing a commitment to social causes. Meanwhile, Bolter has been linked to other business interests, including funeral services.
The couple, who have been married since October 1997 and have five adult children, find themselves at the center of a tragic event that raises questions about the intersection of political discourse and violence in America.
As details continue to unfold, community members and officials alike are left grappling with the implications of this act and its potential ripple effects on Minnesota’s political landscape.
