Customs Seizes $875,000 in Marijuana Disguised as Overalls
In a recent operation, US Customs and Border Protection in Baltimore managed to confiscate $875,000 worth of marijuana disguised as workwear. The seizure occurred on April 29, when officers uncovered over 200 pounds of the drug hidden in 155 vacuum-sealed packages.
This shipment was sent via air freight to Belgium and was labeled as “Male/Heavy Duty Workwear Bib Brace Overalls.” Interestingly, the street value of the marijuana in the US is about $875,000, but it could potentially fetch two to three times that amount in European markets, dependent on quality, according to CBP.
CBP officials emphasized a growing trend where cross-border criminal organizations are trying to export US marijuana to Europe and Africa. “High-quality weeds can earn huge profits,” they noted. Jason Klopianicki, acting area port chief at CBP’s Baltimore Regional Port, remarked that smugglers are looking for ways to capitalize on the oversaturated marijuana market here by illegally exporting large quantities globally.
The investigation is being led by a special agent with the Border Enforcement Security Task Force under Homeland Security Investigations.
Last year, CBP reported an average seizure of 1,571 pounds of drugs at various entry points across the US.
As of now, there has been no immediate response from US Customs and Border Protection regarding any comments on the situation.
