Authorities hunt for four armed individuals involved in a break-in robbery in Petaluma

Police in Northern California are on the hunt for four armed individuals following a bold robbery at a jewelry store. The situation escalated when a bystander attempted to intervene by jumping into the suspects’ getaway car, ultimately crashing it into a storefront in a bid to stop the crime.

According to Petaluma police, six suspects stormed Gold Rush Jewelers on Saturday afternoon, wielding hammers, pepper spray, and firearms. They shattered display cases and made off with stolen jewelry, while one suspect aimed a gun at an employee.

Amid the chaos, a passerby noticed the suspects attempting to flee in their vehicle. A man, motivated to help, jumped into his own car and drove into the jewelry store’s entrance, prompting the thieves to abandon their getaway.

“I was just trying to do the right thing for the owners of this store,” the good Samaritan remarked in an interview.

As police arrived, they observed masked suspects escaping the area, eventually finding the abandoned getaway vehicle.

This intervention triggered a frantic escape attempt. Authorities reported that one of the suspects discharged pepper spray at bystanders during their flight, leaving one person partially blinded temporarily.

“They were furious,” the victim noted. “One jumped over the car and sprayed me. I couldn’t see anything after that.”

Authorities apprehended two suspects following a search involving a sheriff’s helicopter and K9 unit, while the remaining four suspects managed to escape the vicinity.

Police later discovered the getaway car was stolen. The firearm used in the robbery has not yet been recovered.

The suspects in custody were identified as 18-year-old William Butler Clarence from Pittsburgh and Moshae Colon Howell from Antioch. Both have been charged with multiple felonies, including burglary and assault with a firearm.

Though shaken, the store employees were unharmed during the incident.

Community members expressed their shock at the robbery, with varying opinions on the bystanders’ actions. Some labeled it courageous, while others felt it was reckless. One witness commented, “It’s outrageous. They’re very brave. Probably not the best idea.”

Law enforcement has not indicated if the actions taken by the bystanders will be evaluated. They are encouraging anyone with more information or video footage of the incident to reach out to Petaluma police.
