Train Derailment Investigation in Normandy

French officials are looking into a train derailment in Normandy that resulted in 44 injuries, with potential sabotage being considered as a factor after a piece of rail was discovered on the tracks.

The regional train, which was en route from Rouen to Caen, derailed on Friday evening in Cléon, causing one of its carriages to overturn.

A representative from France’s national police communications service mentioned that the rail segment found is “probably” tied to the derailment.

Rouen prosecutor Sebastien Gallois noted, “The reasons for its presence are unknown and will have to be determined by the investigation.”

According to Cléon Mayor Melanie Delacour, those affected were left “in a state of shock.”

She added, “The windows of the carriages that remained upright shattered, and because of the train’s speed, stones flew into the carriages,” she informed.

Police stated that the prosecutor’s office is exercising caution and refraining from drawing conclusions as the inquiry progresses.

Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot reported that 140 firefighters and emergency personnel were dispatched to address the aftermath of the incident.

Among the injured was an 18-year-old woman, who required helicopter transport to Rouen University Hospital in critical condition, as per police reports.

Louis, a passenger on the train, recounted, “Suddenly there were a few jolts, and then after about three seconds it got stronger and stronger. I couldn’t stay in my seat any more. The windows partially shattered, the stones from the track came into the carriage. It was really shocking. I’m still shaking.”
