Investigation Ongoing in Disappearance of Nancy Guthrie
Authorities remain optimistic about locating 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, despite unconfirmed reports suggesting a suspect may have been identified in connection with her disappearance. Guthrie, the mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie, was reported missing on Sunday morning.
Since the report, videos showing what seems to be blood splatter at her front door have circulated, and TMZ has reported receiving a ransom demand stating her safety is contingent on a cryptocurrency payment by a specific deadline.
On Tuesday, former NewsNation host Ashleigh Banfield noted that Nancy’s son-in-law, Tommaso Cioni, had been pointed out as a person of interest. However, by Wednesday, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department clarified that no suspects had been officially named.
Sheriff Chris Nanos expressed that the main goal remains to find Nancy alive, telling NBC News that they believe she is still in the area. “She’s present. She’s alive, and we want to save her,” he stated during a recent episode of “Today.”
Although investigators have shared limited information due to the active nature of the case, the details that have emerged have raised serious alarms. Nancy is reportedly in fragile health and requires daily medication, which authorities believe was left behind at her home along with her cell phone and car keys. This has led to concerns she may have been forcibly taken.
Banfield mentioned that Cioni, married to Nancy’s daughter Annie, is a possible suspect, with Annie being the last person known to have seen Nancy after leaving her home post-dinner Saturday night. It’s unclear if Cioni was at the house during that time.
There are conflicting reports regarding whether Annie’s vehicle was towed; while Banfield claimed it was, the sheriff’s department has not confirmed any vehicle seizure. Additionally, some cameras in the home were reportedly found damaged.
The department informed TMZ that no clear suspects or persons of interest had been established in the case, continuing to interview those who might have interacted with Nancy while awaiting forensic results.
Investigators are also examining a different trespassing incident involving a suspicious individual seen in a neighbor’s yard weeks prior to Nancy’s disappearance, though it’s unclear if this is related to her case.
Authorities admitted that the investigation is still murky, emphasizing they are uncertain about how many individuals might be involved. “It could have been one. It could have been more,” they stated.
