Authorities Report 23-Year Veteran Officer Killed in Hit-And-Run by Suspect Who Dislikes Police

Sergeant Injured in Baton Rouge Hit-and-Run

A sergeant in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was reportedly injured in a deliberate hit-and-run incident on June 16. Baton Rouge Police Chief Thomas Morse confirmed the death of Sergeant Caleb Eisworth, who passed away surrounded by family after battling injuries sustained in the incident.

Witnesses say Gad Black, 41, was driving a pickup truck when he struck Eisworth, who was on a police motorcycle. Reports suggest that during questioning, Black expressed a clear disdain for law enforcement, indicating that the act was intentional.

“Caleb was a great officer and a good guy. He fought hard for seven weeks, but unfortunately, he lost that fight today,” Morse shared.

Investigators linked Black to a concerning social media post and arrested him on the same day for the hit-and-run. Arrest documents reportedly revealed his deep animosity towards police officers.

On Sunday, District Attorney Hillermoor announced plans to elevate the charges against Black from attempted murder to first-degree murder. He mentioned the possibility of seeking the death penalty, but emphasized the importance of consulting with Eisworth’s family before finalizing that decision.

“This case is certainly one where the death penalty is on the table,” the DA stated. “We value the family’s input. I have an idea of what they might say, but I want to discuss it with them directly.”

Moore fondly remembered Eisworth, noting how he always had a smile on his face. “No matter the situation, he managed to be positive. He loved riding those motorcycles,” he said.

The police department updated the public on Eisworth’s condition as reported by his family. On July 9, doctors decided to amputate both of his legs at the knees due to the severity of his injuries.

Black has a history of run-ins with law enforcement, having faced multiple charges related to police pursuits in 2014, including battery against officers.

Additionally, Asia Raby, a person believed to be connected to Black, faces obstruction of justice charges for allegedly misleading police regarding the incident. She reportedly contacted the authorities but abruptly ended the call.
