CDC Updates Stance on Autism and Vaccines
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recently revised its stance regarding the possible connection between vaccines and autism, no longer completely dismissing the potential for a causal relationship.
Emily Hilliard, the Press Secretary for Health and Human Services (HHS), stated, “We are updating the CDC’s website to reflect gold standard, evidence-based science,” when discussing these changes.
The CDC’s updated page titled “Autism and Vaccines” now lays out three important points:
- The assertion that “vaccines do not cause autism” lacks evidence-based support, as existing studies have not definitively ruled out the possibility that vaccines given to infants could be related to autism.
- Health authorities have overlooked studies that suggest a possible link between vaccines and autism.
- The HHS has initiated a thorough evaluation of autism’s causes. This includes looking into possible biological mechanisms and causal factors.
The HHS, headed by Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., is responsible for overseeing the CDC. Kennedy, notably associated with the Make America Healthy Again movement alongside President Donald Trump, has a history of scrutinizing the current vaccine schedule.
In January, Kennedy clarified in front of the Senate Finance Committee, “News reports have claimed that I am anti-vaccine or anti-industry. I am neither. I am pro-safety.”
Hilliard emphasized that “Secretary Kennedy has launched a comprehensive review of autism’s causes, focusing on environmental and biological aspects, all while ensuring transparency and adherence to rigorous scientific standards.” These updates to the CDC’s website are part of a broader agenda to align public information with ongoing scientific research.
Jay Richards, a senior research fellow at The Heritage Foundation, commented on the CDC’s changes, saying, “For years, the CDC has misrepresented what we know—and don’t know—about the relationship between the expanding childhood vaccine schedule and the rise in autism.” He went on to express hope that this shift in the CDC’s language will lead to a genuine investigation into the autism question, regardless of the complexities involved.
Kennedy has also called for global health authorities to remove mercury from all vaccines to prevent exposure to this neurotoxin, stating that “no child, anywhere in the world, is ever exposed to this deadly neurotoxin again.”
