More than a month after Mandisa was found dead in her suburban Nashville home, the medical examiner’s autopsy report indicated her cause of death was complications from Class III obesity.

Class III obesity is defined as a BMI of 40 or greater, or a BMI of 35 or greater and experiencing obesity-related health conditions. According to the Cleveland ClinicClass III obesity was previously called “morbid obesity” because it causes serious health conditions known as “comorbidities.” However, this name was later changed because using the word “morbid” to describe obesity sent a “false and problematic social” signal, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
Mandisa’s cause of death has been listed as “natural causes.” According to People magazine:She was 47 years old.
The “American Idol” alum has spoken publicly about her struggles with depression and weight after losing a close friend.
“[Emotional eating] “This is what I’ve done my whole life,” she says. Enrolled in 2017“As I first shared here, after losing 120 pounds, I gained it all back and then gained another 75. After Kisha passed away, I fell into the deepest depression of my life.”
Mandisa’s father, John Handley, denied rumors that his daughter committed suicide at the memorial event, explaining that she had been suffering from complications related to COVID-19.
“She didn’t harm herself,” he said. “Like she said, Mandisa loved the Lord and the Lord loved Mandisa.”
“One thing you may not know is that she told me a while ago that she had COVID-19 and was weak trying to get through it, but she was trying to get through it,” Hundley explained.
Handley said her daughter was found on the floor next to her bed and believed she had fallen but was unable to reach her cell phone to call for help.
“This is what I think happened,” he said.
“Mandisa was found collapsed in her bedroom, lying on the floor,” he explained. “Looking from behind the bed, she was lying on the left side. It was obvious she was lying there and there were a couple of large rugs and some clothes on there. To the right of the bed, in front, there was a nightstand and her cell phone was on the right side of the bed. There was no way for Mandisa to get around the bed and get out and pick up a phone to call for help.”
