‘Avatar’ And Oscar-Winning ‘Titanic’ Producer Jon Landau Dies At 63

Jon Landau, the Oscar-winning producer who worked closely with director James Cameron on the two “Avatar” films and “Titanic,” has died at the age of 63.

Landau’s family announced his death on Saturday but did not disclose the cause of death.

Landau, along with Cameron, received three Academy Award nominations for Titanic in 1997, winning Best Picture.

In a statement, Cameron paid tribute to his “closest collaborator and dearest friend of 31 years.” “A part of me has been torn away,” he said.

“His quirky humor, magnetic charm, generosity of spirit and intensity have been at the heart of our Avatar universe for almost two decades,” Cameron said. “His legacy lies not just in the films he produced, but in the personal example he left behind: indomitable, compassionate, inclusive, tireless, insightful and utterly unique.”

Following his time as producer on Titanic, Landor’s partnership with Cameron continued, with Landor becoming a top executive at Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment.

In 2009, Avatar surpassed Titanic at the box office and remains the highest-grossing film of all time.

Landau was 29 years old and was named executive vice president of feature films at age 20.Number At Century Fox he produced such blockbusters as Home Alone and its sequel Mrs. Doubtfire and True Lies, where he first worked closely with Cameron.

Jon Landau is survived by his wife Julie, his two children Jamie and Jody, and three brothers and sisters.
