Navy Aviators Eject from Aircraft Near Virginia

On Monday evening, two U.S. Navy aviators had to eject while attempting to land their plane on the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, which was stationed off the coast of Virginia. The Navy referred to this incident as a “mishap” that resulted in injuries to four sailors on board.

One of these sailors is receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries at a hospital in the Norfolk area, according to Navy reports.

The pilots, who are part of Carrier Air Wing 3, were rescued by search and rescue teams and are currently being assessed by medical staff.

The specific model of the two-seater aircraft involved in this event has not been disclosed, nor has there been any detailed information about the circumstances that led to the mishap.

The Navy has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the incident.

The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, a nuclear-powered Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, has been active since 1977. This event comes on the heels of other incidents where military aviators have recently ejected due to emergencies.

In May, for example, four Navy personnel ejected safely after two EA-18G Growler jets collided during a demonstration in Idaho, causing both planes, valued at about $67 million each, to crash.

Former TOPGUN pilot Matthew “Whiz” Buckley shared insights about the dangers of ejection, explaining that it can lead to lifelong injuries. He noted that some of his acquaintances who ejected experienced significant spinal injuries that altered their height.

Buckley highlighted the terrifying nature of the experience: “When you pull that handle, you have two choices: die or maybe live. And I said, ‘maybe live’ because it’s incredibly violent.” He added that many people don’t recall the ejection but only remember pulling the handle and then waking up, often in their parachute.
