Axelrod slams effort to keep Trump off the ballot: ‘It worries me’

CNN commentator David Axelrod, who served as an adviser during the Obama administration, denounced efforts by several states to keep former President Trump from voting in 2024, calling it “very destructive” and ” “It will cause a huge reaction,” he said.

“I think it’s going to have a big reaction. And that worries me. I worry partly because of Donald Trump,” Axelrod said.

Axelrod went on to point out the suspicions Americans had about their own government even before Trump was voted out because of the 14th Amendment’s insurrectionist clause.

“There’s already a lot of cynicism about our institutions. And the strength of our democracy is these institutions. That’s why we have to do what Colorado courts are proposing. You can make a case,” Axelrod said.

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear whether President Trump can be disqualified from voting in Colorado over his actions surrounding the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.

Oral arguments are scheduled to begin Thursday.

“I’m not here as an apologist for Donald Trump, and I’m certainly not here as a lawyer, but one of the things the Supreme Court has to consider is how does a decision like this… I am confident that it will have a significant impact.” “

“I’m trying to imagine what would happen if the Supreme Court said, ‘We’re going to take the Republican front-runner off the ballot and essentially say to the American people, ‘You don’t have a chance to vote for him.’ ” ”

Dozens of challenges to Trump’s eligibility have been filed across the country, most of which have been rejected by lower courts.

Two states have so far removed Trump from their votes: Colorado and Maine.
