Democratic strategist David Axelrod said he believes former President Trump still has a “significant advantage” in the November election, as Democrats look to Harris’ campaign.
“Given the challenges ahead of him, I still rate him as the strong favorite in this race.” Axelrod said: Tuesday on the podcast “Hacks on Tap.”
The podcast hosts praised President Biden’s decision to suspend his campaign bid, after he announced Sunday he was stepping aside in favor of Harris, the presumptive Democratic nominee.
After the announcement, Mr Axelrod, who had been one of the most prominent voices in the Democratic Party calling for Mr Biden to stop campaigning, said Mr Biden’s decision was “unfortunate” but “necessary”.
Harris said she was looking forward to winning the nomination, but Democrats like Axelrod worry the “coronation” won’t go well.
Still, Harris has secured enough delegates to win the Democratic nomination, has received endorsements from leading Democrats and is seeing a surge in online support and donations.
With all eyes on the vice president, questions have arisen as to who she will choose as her running mate.
“This is my first decision as president, it’s about how I’m going to govern, and I have a list of candidates. I honestly think there are two candidates who are the most serious. One is the governor.” [Josh] “The other is Senator Shapiro from Pennsylvania and the other is Senator Mark Kelly from Arizona,” Axelrod said.
The first poll since Biden withdrew gave Harris a two-point lead over Trump, with 44% approving of her and 42% approving of Trump.
Pollsters for the Trump campaign have predicted that Ms Harris’ approval rating will rise in the wake of the announcement but then level off.
