Azerbaijan Invests in Ukraine Following Peace Agreement with Armenia Facilitated by Trump

Azerbaijan Increases Humanitarian Aid to Ukraine

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev issued an order on Monday to provide an additional $2 million in humanitarian assistance to Ukraine, primarily aimed at supplying essential electrical equipment. This contribution follows a previous aid package of $1 million that was approved in February.

Aliyev also condemned Russia’s recent airstrikes targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, especially those affecting oil and gas facilities linked to Azerbaijani enterprises. He reassured that these attacks would not obstruct ongoing energy cooperation between Azerbaijan and Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed gratitude to Aliyev for supporting the restoration of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, which has suffered damage from Russian military actions. In a conversation with Aliyev, Zelensky pointed out that the recent strikes were a deliberate attempt by Russia to disrupt energy routes critical to Ukraine and other European nations.

Zelensky also commended Azerbaijani leaders for their recent peace agreement with Armenia, facilitated by U.S. President Donald Trump. He noted that reactions to the trilateral conference held in Washington were intense, and he expressed hope that the discussions would lead to positive outcomes.

The long-standing conflict over disputed territories between Azerbaijan and Armenia continues. Meanwhile, traditional mediators, often associated with Russia, have struggled to find effective resolutions.

Following events in the region, Armenia has reacted strongly against perceived Russian inaction concerning Azerbaijani interventions in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, which saw significant violence recently. Azerbaijan has faced accusations related to human rights abuses and organized crime during these episodes.

Reports indicate that Azerbaijan might consider lifting its military aid embargo to Ukraine. The Azeri military possesses a range of Soviet-era armaments that could be beneficial to Ukraine, given their compatibility with existing Ukrainian weapon stockpiles.

Some of Aliyev’s critics highlight concerns about the support he receives from Western nations, arguing that they overlook his authoritarian governance in favor of securing assistance against Russian aggression.

Aliyev, who has recently secured a fifth term in office under questionable electoral circumstances, maintains a contentious relationship with opposition voices and media. Human rights activists have criticized Azerbaijan’s actions in Nagorno-Karabakh, interpreting them as ethnic cleansing. In the face of international scrutiny, Aliyev has restricted media freedom and taken action against organizations like the BBC, while navigating complex geopolitical dynamics, particularly concerning European energy independence from Russia.
