UConn Triumphs Over Michigan in Women’s Basketball Showcase
Aji Fad scored an impressive 31 points, while Sarah Strong secured a double-double with 16 points and 20 rebounds as the University of Connecticut edged out Michigan, 72-69, in a thrilling matchup at the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Showcase.
UConn’s coach, Geno Auriemma, had stated earlier in the week that facing Michigan could be one of the toughest early-season challenges for his squad. Turns out, he was right.
Initially, it seemed like UConn (5-0) would take command early on, but the Wolverines (4-1) managed to battle back after falling behind by 17 points midway through the third quarter. They created a 13-0 scoring run that closed the gap to 49-45 heading into the final quarter.
Fudd hit a much-needed three-pointer, breaking an almost eight-minute scoring drought for the Huskies and igniting a 9-0 run that restored a double-digit lead for UConn.
But Michigan wasn’t finished fighting. In a tense final minute, Saira Sword’s three-pointer put her team ahead at 68-66. UConn was quick to respond, though, as Fudd was fouled five seconds later and calmly sunk two free throws to regain a two-possession lead.
With just about 12 seconds left, Sword added another deep three-pointer, narrowing the score to 70-69. Fudd then solidified UConn’s position with two additional free throws under eight seconds remaining, leaving Michigan with no opportunity to tie the game.
Sword finished the game with 29 points, while Olivia Olson contributed 18 points for the Wolverines.
UConn’s performance showcased Strong’s versatility; she dominated early with six points, nine rebounds, and three blocks in the first quarter, ending it with a commanding 22-5 lead. Fudd stepped up in the second quarter, netting 13 points, and helping UConn to a 45-27 advantage at halftime.
This matchup marks the third instance in the past two seasons in which the University of Michigan has faced the top-ranked team. They previously fell to South Carolina and UCLA last year. Interestingly, prior to this matchup, Michigan had only faced a top-ranked team once back in 1988.
Looking Ahead
UConn will next face Utah State, while Michigan will go up against Syracuse on Sunday.
