B-2 bombers sent to Guam; it is uncertain if this is connected to Middle East tensions, according to an official.

The ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel has led to some notable military movements. Recently, reports confirmed that a B-2 stealth bomber departed from Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri, heading towards Guam. Interestingly, a U.S. official mentioned that no orders have been issued to relocate the aircraft from Guam, leaving its deployment’s connection to the escalating tensions in the Middle East somewhat unclear.

According to a report, eight KC-135 Strato tankers accompany the B-2, enabling aerial refueling. The report speculates that it might eventually head to Diego Garcia, a U.S. military base situated in the Indian Ocean.

Moreover, there’s been discussion about the need for specific aircraft capable of deploying a 30,000-pound bomb on Iran’s nuclear facilities. It raises questions about the strategies and capabilities needed in this scenario.

Retired Navy Commander Jim “Pack” Howe suggested that the stealth bombers could indeed make the distance to Guam. However, if Diego Garcia is the target, the range of the tankers might pose limitations in keeping the B-2s operational.

Diego Garcia itself is quite strategically positioned, about 2,400 miles from Iran, featuring deep-sea ports and long runways excellent for bombers, along with advanced communication setups. Historically, the U.S. has utilized this base to counter threats from Iran, and two B-2 bombers were stationed there in March amidst prior Iranian threats against U.S. installations.

It’s still uncertain whether Iranian missiles can target Diego Garcia, but there’s a sense of heightened risk for U.S. forces in the region if conflict escalates further.

Each B-2 stealth bomber can carry significant payloads, including two 30,000-pound GBU-57 bombs, which many consider essential for striking the Iranian nuclear site at Fordow effectively. Experts have noted that targeting Fordow from the air is a mission that seems to rest primarily with the U.S.
