Westlake Police Lt. Gerald Vogel said a woman walking her dog discovered the mother and baby Tuesday evening near the West Spring Inn on Sperry Drive.
Vogel said the witness found the newborn baby face down in the grass and crying, and tried to wake the mother multiple times before asking hotel staff to call 911. Vogel added that the witness cut the umbilical cord and cared for the baby until emergency responders arrived on the scene.
The 42-year-old mother and a 35-year-old man who identified himself as the baby’s father told police the baby was born “out of the blue” in their hotel room, according to reports. The reports did not reveal the parents’ names.

Vogel told the outlet that his father was arrested after police discovered he had multiple outstanding arrest warrants with the Ohio Department of Parole and drug charges.
“Vogel stated that Westlake EMS transported the mother to a local hospital and the Department of Children and Family Services responded upon arrival,” according to the report.
