Super Bowl LX Halftime Show Faces Backlash
The halftime performance during Sunday night’s Super Bowl LX, featuring Latin trap artist Bad Bunny, drew significant criticism from many Americans. President Donald Trump labeled it as “one of the worst in history.”
On Truth Social, Trump expressed his views saying, “The Super Bowl halftime show is absolutely awful, one of the worst ever! It makes no sense, it’s an insult to American greatness, and it doesn’t represent our standards of success, creativity, and excellence. No one can understand a word this guy is saying, and the dancing is disgusting, especially for young kids watching from all over America and around the world.” He added that the performance felt like “a slap in the face” to the nation, highlighting that America is achieving great things, including record highs in the stock market and 401(k) accounts.
Many conservative influencers joined in the criticism, with Harmeet Dhillon, an assistant attorney general for civil rights, also weighing in. A common point of contention was the show’s near-exclusive use of the Spanish language.
Interestingly, some fans and sports figures, like former NFL player JJ Watt and New York Knicks player Jalen Brunson, had a different take, praising the show.
The performance concluded with the message “The only thing more powerful than hate is love,” displayed on the Levi Stadium videoboard, which sparked interpretations as a political statement.
While the show aimed to be the first Super Bowl halftime show conducted entirely in Spanish, pop artist Lady Gaga made an unexpected appearance, singing “Die With a Smile” by Bruno Mars.
Bad Bunny donned a football jersey that read “Ocasio 64,” drawing speculation about its significance. Some suggested it referenced the initial death toll from Hurricane Maria, initially reported by the Puerto Rican government.
Many viewers opted to skip this year’s halftime show, choosing instead to watch Turning Point USA’s “All-American” halftime special, featuring Kid Rock and other notable figures.
White House press secretary Caroline Levitt confirmed that the president planned to watch the alternative halftime show. She remarked, “The president would prefer a Kid Rock performance over Bad Bunny.”
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell had previously defended the choice of Bad Bunny, stating, “Listen, Bad Bunny is one of the great artists in the world. One reason we chose him is that he understands the platform he’s on, which can be used to unite people through creativity and talent.”
