A 6-year-old New Jersey girl died from head trauma caused by a freak badminton racket on the last day of a family trip with her parents and three siblings.

According to Jesse Morgan, pastor of Green Pond Bible Chapel in Rockaway, New Jersey, and the girl’s father, Lucy Morgan and her family had been enjoying a fun time in Limerick, Maine, when tragedy struck on their final day there.

“We have a gorgeous lakeside cottage in Maine and were just enjoying our last full day here together. We were having a quick lunch by the lake when the kids decided to play badminton in the front yard,” Jesse wrote on his blog. A new creative life.

“Bethany and I were relaxing in the back seat and we heard screaming,” he said.

Lucy suffered an unexpected blow when the shaft of a racket being played by her 10-year-old brother broke off and flew into her skull.

“A freak accident in which the racket broke on a downward swing caused sharp shrapnel to pierce Lucy’s skull as she sat on the sideline, causing severe injuries,” Jesse wrote. “She was still breathing but unresponsive when Bethany held her, crying out to God.”

Her father documented the ordeal as the family prayed to God for a miracle for their little daughter’s life.

On Lucy’s second day in the hospital, Jesse and his wife, Bethany, told her three siblings how difficult Lucy’s life was.

“We broke the news as gently as possible, but it’s a conversation you never want to have with a 4, 8 or 10 year old,” he wrote.

As doctors repeatedly evaluated Lucy’s health, her three siblings showed their support by tenderly holding their sister’s hands, kissing her and creating artwork in her memory.

“From Shiloh’s creativity and tender attention to Silas’ kisses and hugs, they are each being taught to understand their own limitations and choose to grieve as long as they can,” Jessie wrote. “A visit to their bedside to hold their hand, talk to them, or wait while they create something before slowly walking in are all welcome.”

“Four weeks ago, she asked Bethany how she could be with God and be saved,” Jesse wrote. “Bethany explained it to her and offered to pray with her, but ‘Miss Independent’ wanted to do it herself. She went to her room and prayed to God for forgiveness and told him that she believed in the death and resurrection of Jesus.”

“What a gift,” he said.

Jesse wrote that he and his wife were comforted when they found her “prayer journal,” saying, “It was as if God was writing with me.”

“It was as if God was writing with her and drawing her to him,” Jessie wrote. “I cannot comprehend how a six-year-old could write a diary like that. After that, she seemed unable to write, but instead painted beautiful pictures of Bible stories and things in her heart.”

“May he bless you on your journey,” Jesse concluded his blog post. “I know he’ll keep you grounded.”
