Baker Mayfield’s Challenging 2025 Season
Baker Mayfield has a reputation for being a resilient quarterback, but it seems like he’s perhaps pushing it a bit too hard. The 2025 season was definitely a tough one.
In Netflix’s “Quarterback” series, it was revealed that last season, he struggled through a series of injuries, which seemed to impact his play as the year went on.
Mayfield spoke about dealing with MCL and PCL sprains, along with a bicep strain since Week 2—he mentioned how these injuries affected his throwing speed.
Additionally, he suffered a shoulder injury in Week 10 during a game against the Rams.
Greg Orman reported that Mayfield was on the injury report ten times last season, yet he never missed a game. Quite determined, I guess. He had eight different injuries and only missed practice twice.
It’s interesting to note how Mayfield’s 2025 season reflected a tale of two halves. In the first eight weeks, he looked like a strong MVP candidate, leading the Buccaneers to a 6-2 record with 13 touchdowns and just three interceptions.
However, everything took a turn for the worse after the Buccaneers had their bye week.
The team ended with only two wins and seven losses, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2019 in a rather weak NFC South, wrapping up the season with an 8-9 record.
Mayfield was at the center of the team’s decline, showing inconsistent accuracy and throwing nine interceptions in the last nine games. It’s tough to watch, honestly.
In April, former Buccaneers linebacker Lavonte David discussed Mayfield’s strenuous season on “The Arena” podcast. He expressed, “Baker was in a lot of trouble. He had so many injuries that most quarterbacks wouldn’t even attempt to play.” It really puts things in perspective.
Interestingly, this challenging season came right after a remarkable 2024, where he threw 41 touchdowns and achieved a record 71.4% completion rate.
Throughout his three years with the Buccaneers, Mayfield has made it to the playoffs twice and thrown 95 touchdowns.
Now at 31, he’s entering the final year of his three-year contract extension, set to last through 2024, but he hasn’t signed a new deal just yet.
