Baker Mayfield mocks Giants’ Tommy DeVito with his hand gesture

Tommy DeVito's second chance with the Giants got off to a terrible start, but Baker Mayfield is pushing it well.

After the Buccaneers quarterback scored a rushing touchdown to take a 23-0 lead before halftime, he celebrated with DeVito's signature two-handed gesture at MetLife Stadium, which has yet to witness a home win for the Giants this season. jeered the crowd.

The Giants decided to bench Daniel Jones after a 2-8 start and ultimately released him on Friday before reinstating DeVito for his first start of the season.

Jones is expected to be released from waivers on Monday and then be able to sign with a new team.

DeVito, a 26-year-old from New Jersey, replaced the injured Jones last season and helped the team win several games, becoming a fan favorite.

But in the first half Sunday, DeVito was just 3-for-5 for 31 yards as the Giants were once again embarrassed on their home field.

Last year, he started six games and finished the season with a 3-3 record, 1,101 passing yards, eight touchdowns, and three interceptions.

Jones, 27, was drafted sixth overall in 2019 and is in his sixth season with Big Blue.

Brian Daboll helped the Giants reach the playoffs in his first season as head coach in 2022, after which the Giants signed him to a four-year, $160 million contract.

However, Jones struggled in the injury-shortened 2023 season by six games, throwing for 2,070 yards, eight touchdowns and seven interceptions in 10 games this year.

The Giants announced Monday that Jones would replace DeVito on the bench, leaving reserve Drew Lock as the No. 2 player.

The team also appears committed to signing Tim Boyle with the Giants and keeping Jones off the field to avoid $23 million in injury guarantees.

Mr. Jones then requested his release, which was granted on Friday.
