Baker Mayfield Connects with Tristan Wirfs for Touchdown
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers showcased some creativity against the Arizona Cardinals, highlighted by Baker Mayfield throwing a touchdown to offensive lineman Tristan Wirfs in the second quarter.
Wirfs, who stands at 6-foot-5 and weighs 320 pounds, was eligible to catch the pass during a crucial third-and-goal situation from the 1-yard line. As Mayfield took the snap, he feigned a handoff to his running back and quickly scanned the field, spotting Wirfs wide open.
This moment marked Wirfs’ first receiving touchdown in his NFL journey. It also represented the Buccaneers’ first score of the game. By that point, Mayfield had a solid 11 completions on 15 attempts for 117 yards, all while battling through a shoulder injury sustained the previous week against the Los Angeles Rams. He had sprained the AC joint in his non-throwing shoulder but pushed through the discomfort to play against the Cardinals.
Tampa Bay entered the matchup with a narrow lead in their NFC division. Both they and the Carolina Panthers held a record of 6-5, yet the Buccaneers were positioned as the No. 4 seed. Meanwhile, the Cardinals, sitting at 3-8, were eager to turn their season around. The team was without Kyler Murray and had started Jacoby Brissett in his place.
