Mayfield Leads Buccaneers to Narrow Victory Over Texans
Maybe it’s pure talent or perhaps just Baker Mayfield being Baker Mayfield. Whatever it is, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback orchestrated an impressive 11-play, 80-yard drive to clinch a tense 20-19 win against the Houston Texans.
On the pivotal last drive, Mayfield faced a daunting fourth and ten from his own 32-yard line, with the Texans’ defense closing in. Remarkably, he scrambled for 15 yards, securing a crucial first down. Shortly after, he spotted Buck Irving making a run across the field, connecting with him for an additional 22 yards before Richard White dashed into the end zone for a two-yard touchdown, putting the Buccaneers one point ahead.
Despite having only six seconds left on the clock, the Texans couldn’t mount another offensive play.
Throughout the game, Mayfield took some hits—he was sacked four times and endured heavy pressure on several occasions. Surprisingly, he still managed to complete 25 of 38 passes for a total of 225 yards and threw two touchdown passes, while also rushing for 33 yards.
Buccaneers Strike Early
In the first quarter, Mayfield found receiver Ryan Miller for a 20-yard touchdown. Later, he connected with rookie Emeka Egbuka for a 15-yard touchdown, giving Tampa Bay a 14-10 edge at halftime.
Meanwhile, Texans quarterback CJ Stroud had a rough time against Tampa Bay’s relentless defense, yet he managed to rally in the later stages of the game.
With just over two minutes left, Stroud handed the ball to veteran running back Nick Chubb, who ran for 25 yards, marking his first rushing touchdown since November 2024. Despite this effort, the Texans’ defense didn’t hold up, allowing the Buccaneers to seize the victory.
Stroud ended the game with 24 completions out of 33 attempts for 207 yards and a touchdown pass to Nico Collins.
With this win, the Buccaneers improved to 2-0 for the season, extending a streak of five consecutive seasons starting with such a record, while the Texans fell to 0-2.
