Baker Mayfield Responds to Critics After Monday Night Win
Baker Mayfield had a clear message for those making fun of him and the Buccaneers.
On Monday night, social media lit up as the Tampa Bay quarterback engaged with Texas safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson. During the game, an incident in the third quarter drew attention when Mayfield appeared to be injured after being tackled from behind by Will Anderson Jr.
Despite the hit, Mayfield quickly confronted Gardner-Johnson and helped guide the Buccaneers to a narrow 20-19 win in “Monday Night Football.”
“We don’t take any nonsense. That’s just how it is,” Mayfield told reporters on Wednesday.
Mayfield had been asked what was going through his mind after the hit and subsequent exchange with Gardner-Johnson, reaffirming his stance on not backing down. The brief confrontation seemed to fuel his performance.
After the game, Mayfield expressed feeling “great,” even after taking some big hits during the match. He mentioned wearing a compression sleeve on his foot but noted that it felt “good” while speaking to the media.
Reports indicated he fully participated in a walkthrough later that week but was still listed with a foot/toe issue on the injury report.
In a lighter moment, Mayfield shared a playful post on Instagram regarding the game with Gardner-Johnson, which prompted a cheeky response from the safety, who quipped, “This cute, but still ringless,” referring to his Super Bowl win with the Eagles last year.
Looking ahead, the Buccaneers will face the Jets this weekend as they aim for a 3-0 start. Mayfield, now in his third season with Tampa Bay, has already made significant strides, with five touchdown passes and 382 yards in just two games.
