Parents in New Jersey Unite for Children’s Independence
In a New Jersey town, parents are joining forces to help their children gain independence and cut down on screen time. This initiative is gaining traction, now reaching over 100 communities.
Holly Moscatiello, a mother of three, appeared on a morning show to discuss her creation of The Balance Project. The organization aims to assist families in finding a harmonious balance between engaging in real-life experiences and using technology mindfully.
“I became increasingly aware of how a screen-dependent childhood impacts healthy development and mental well-being,” Moscatiello shared. She founded The Balance Project to safeguard the well-being of all generations.
Moscatiello recognizes the necessity of technology in today’s world but emphasizes the importance of teaching children how to use it responsibly. “It’s about ensuring that tech doesn’t overshadow the real-life experiences that define childhood and humanity,” she expressed.
The response to her message has been encouraging. The Balance Project now covers 140 communities, each facing its own challenges with smartphones and social media.
Noticing smartphones appearing among children as young as fourth and fifth grade in her community, Moscatiello and her husband took action before this trend solidified.
She described how they initiated conversations about smartphone use by bringing together parents and fourth-graders. “We discussed the developmental stage of fifth-graders and highlighted the benefits of play and skills development over passive scrolling,” she noted.
The outcome has been positive. “Kids are responding well,” Moscatiello reported. “Now, many fifth-graders are choosing to go without cell phones for the first time, which is part of our goal across the nation.”
Moscatiello advises parents to hold off on giving their kids smartphones “for as long as they can,” suggesting ideally waiting until high school. “You’re opening a door to a world of access,” she cautioned. “So make sure to think carefully about that decision.”
