Baltimore bridge collapse witnesses describe ‘earthquake’

A Baltimore resident said it felt like an entire house had fallen as the 1.9-mile-long bridge crashed into the river in the terrifying collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge early Tuesday morning.

The man, who gave his name as John, said the impact of the crash, which occurred just after 1:30 a.m., was “like a big lightning strike.”

“And, like I said, it felt like an earthquake. The whole house was vibrating and it was like the house was going to collapse.” he told WJZ.

He said police then rushed to the scene after hearing the sound of fire.

Rescue boats on the Patapsco River continue to search for the 20 missing people.

“I can’t believe there were people on that bridge when it fell. It’s crazy,” John said.

“I’ve lived in this neighborhood for 57 years. I remember when that bridge started being built and I can’t believe it’s gone,” he added.
