A portion of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge was collided with a large boat early Tuesday morning, causing part of it to collapse and sending multiple vehicles into the ocean.
A video posted on X shows the vessel colliding with the bridge at around 1:30 a.m., catching fire and sinking, sending multiple vehicles into the sea below.
“Due to an accident on the I-695 Key Bridge, all lanes are closed in both directions. Traffic is being detoured,” the Maryland Department of Transportation posted on X.
Baltimore Coast Guard Petty Officer 1st Class Matthew West told the New York Times that the Coast Guard received a report of the collision at 1:27 a.m. ET. West announced that the Singapore-flagged 948-foot (29-meter) cargo ship Dali crashed into a bridge that is part of Interstate 695.
According to maritime data platform Marine Traffic, the Dali left Baltimore at 1 a.m. and was headed for Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka.
Baltimore Mayor Brandon M. Scott and County Executive Johnny Olszewski Jr. said emergency personnel were on the scene and rescue efforts were underway.
