Being a Heisman Trophy runner-up doesn’t guarantee an easy path to the NFL, and Diego Pavia is currently experiencing that reality. On Thursday, the Baltimore Ravens waived the former Vanderbilt University quarterback. Notably, he didn’t even make it to the opening day of the team’s training camp next Wednesday.

Despite not being drafted in 2026, Pavia’s release from the Ravens might come at a favorable time. He’s now free to pursue opportunities with other NFL teams before training camps officially kick off, which could allow him a chance to compete for a spot on someone’s roster.

If that doesn’t pan out, he might consider Canada, potentially eyeing a spot with a CFL team struggling with quarterback injuries. The CFL season lasts until October, after all.

Yet, getting cut now is still a significant setback for Pavia. It’s tough because the Ravens were the team that brought him in for workouts post-draft and seemed keen on keeping him around during off-season activities.

Essentially, the Ravens released Pavia to make space for veteran center Ethan Pocic. From a broader perspective, Baltimore’s quarterback situation indicated Pavia was likely their third-best contender for the backup role.

The Ravens decided they didn’t require three quarterbacks vying for the final roster spot, narrowing it down to veteran Skylar Thompson and rookie Joe Fagnano, both of whom joined as undrafted free agents like Pavia.
