Bam Adebayo responds to critique of his 83-point game: 'I’m not bothered'

Bam Adebayo Stands Firm After 83-Point Game

Bam Adebayo hasn’t offered any apologies.

Following an impressive 83-point display against the Wizards recently, the Miami Heat star is already past the chatter about whether he could have matched Kobe Bryant’s 81 points scored in 2006—still the second highest in NBA history.

“First of all, it’s not just on me. The blame should be shared,” Adebayo pointed out after the Heat’s victory over the Bucks on Thursday. He recounted how the Washington team allowed him to go one-on-one throughout the game until he reached 70 points. “Once I hit that mark with nine minutes remaining? You really think I wouldn’t take advantage?”

The discussion surrounding Adebayo’s unprecedented performance, along with Bryant’s legacy, has especially zeroed in on the game’s final minutes against Washington. Adebayo benefited from teammates fouling opponents during a rather chaotic game, allowing him additional shot opportunities.

In the latter part of the game, he set an NBA record by sinking 36 free throws.

This has drawn criticism from many, including former NBA All-Star Gordon Hayward, who feels such actions might undermine Bryant’s legacy. The Lakers legend tragically passed away in a helicopter accident in January 2020.

“When you bring in the notion of what’s ethical in basketball, it’s baffling,” Adebayo expressed. “I mean, I had 70 points with nine minutes left. Who’s honestly going to volunteer to take a seat? I wouldn’t. If I’m this close to greatness, I’m going to go for it. It’s like when you’re playing a game of 21, and you’re at 19. You aren’t just going to sit back and watch.”

He acknowledged the free throw debate by stating, “It’s not like I’m averaging a ton of free throws a game. Look at the tape; every time I was fouled, it was legitimate. That’s how I ended up at the line.”

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra also showed no intent to placate critics.

“I don’t apologize to anyone for how we play,” he asserted on Thursday.

Adebayo, noted for his defensive prowess, managed just 21 points in the subsequent match against Milwaukee. However, his record-setting achievement remains significant.

“To move forward, we need to secure victories differently. This time, it wasn’t 83 points; it was just 21,” he remarked. “And honestly, if anyone’s upset, that’s on them.”
