Bangladesh’s Acting Leader Muhammad Yunus Considers Stepping Down: Report

Bangladesh’s Interim Government Chief Resigns

Dhaka: Muhammad Yunus Marz, the head of Bangladesh’s interim government, has stepped down, reportedly due to difficulties in functioning amid a lack of consensus among political parties. This news was shared by BBC Bangla Service, citing NHID Islam, the leader of the CP.

Islam mentioned, “We’ve been hearing about Sir Yunus’s resignation this morning, so I went to discuss it with him, and he indicated that he was considering it.” The Prime Minister’s advisor expressed concern about his ability to work effectively in the current political climate, stating, “Unless the parties can come together, I cannot fulfill my role.”

The NCP leader, who had previously shown support for Yunus, urged him to stand firm for the nation’s safety and future, aligning with the hopes of a widespread movement for change.

Islam conveyed optimism that political factions would unify and collaborate with Yunus, stating, “I hope everyone will work together with him.” However, he also noted that if Yunus feels he cannot perform his duties, then there is little reason for him to remain in his position, especially if trust is lacking.

Yunus’s government has faced multiple challenges in recent days, especially concerning the military’s involvement, which was significant during last year’s student-led protests aimed at dismantling Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government. In those protests, the military, while called to mitigate tensions, ended up being involved in suppressing demonstrations.

Nevertheless, the military aimed for a smooth transition for Hasina, utilizing Air Force planes and strategic appointments, which effectively supported Yunus’s ascension alongside the Students’ Request for Discrimination (SAD).
