Baptist college withdraws LGBTQIA+ grant following criticism

Baylor University Accepts, Then Returns LGBTQ Grant

Baylor University, known for its strong Baptist values and located in Waco, Texas, has been a significant player in Texas’s religious landscape. Recently, changes at the university caught attention. They accepted a grant of nearly $700,000 from the Eula Mae and John Baugh Foundation intended to encourage LGBTQ inclusion and church participation.

The university announced the funding through a press release, stating it aimed to deepen understanding and address the lack of acceptance of certain groups, particularly within church communities.

As this news made rounds, Ally Beth Stuckey commented on the situation, emphasizing how Baylor seemed proud and optimistic about the grant. She pointed to specific initiatives funded by this grant, like “Courage from Margin: Inclusion and Attribution Practices of LGBTQIA Plus.” It opened up questions, though; for instance, what exactly does the “plus” entail?

The project’s goal appears to be collecting experiences from individuals, including women, to enhance church environments. Some studies aim to create resources that promote more inclusive practices for LGBTQIA individuals.

However, Stuckey raised concerns, suggesting the research might be used to push agendas that conflict with traditional biblical values, essentially accusing the study of emotional manipulation.

Shortly after the initial announcement, Baylor University opted to return the grant funds. In a statement on their website, President Linda Livingston maintained that the decision was to act appropriately and prioritize the university’s values.

She clarified that while Baylor aims to foster a welcoming community for all students, including LGBTQIA+ individuals, the advocacy involved in the grant contradicts Baylor’s institutional policies on human sexuality.

The university believes it has a biblical understanding of sexuality, viewing it as a gift from God, and upholding the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman.
