Barack Obama approved Gavin Newsom's Prop. 50 redistricting plan

Former President Barack Obama has openly endorsed Governor Gavin Newsom’s redistricting initiative, Proposition 50, according to Newsom during a recent interview.

Newsom admitted feeling “very nervous” last summer while seeking Obama’s insights regarding Proposition 50, which passed with overwhelming support in November. This measure was designed to alter California’s congressional districts in a way that would benefit Democrats in the upcoming midterm elections, as he mentioned to Axios.

“I wasn’t even part of the conversation, but he said, ‘I just want to let you know that I like what you’re saying and I want you to do that,’” Newsom recalled, referring to his discussion about Proposition 50.

This conversation, according to Newsom, marked a significant shift in their connection.

He expressed surprise at the endorsement, especially given the “if they go low, we go high” principle that characterized Obama’s presidency.

“[Obama], despite all his efforts on independent redistricting, granted us cover and moral authority,” Newsom added.

He mentioned that he regularly communicates with Obama and even met him at Rev. Jesse Jackson’s funeral.

During their conversation, Obama pointed at Newsom, seemingly signaling his approval for the California governor, who many anticipate will run for president.

Proposition 50, which gained approval from 65% of California voters, was introduced partly as a response to similar redistricting attempts in Texas aimed at benefiting Republicans.

Political analysts suggest that gerrymandering could potentially secure five additional seats in the House for Democrats, which could lead to retirements among members like Rep. Darrell Issa, who chose not to run in the newly redistricted CA-48.

In support of the measure, Obama conveyed a message through social media, stating, “Democracy will be on the ballot on November 4th.” He added, “Republicans want to take enough seats out of Congress to rig the election and wield unlimited power for two more years.”
