Former President Barack Obama recently commended a group of Texas Democrats for their efforts in blocking district bills and their choice to leave the state. Reports say that Texas Senator Gene Wu, who chairs the Texas House Democrat Caucus, thanked Obama for engaging with lawmakers via Zoom.
Senator Wu expressed that the Democrats found Obama’s encouragement motivating, stating they remain dedicated to promoting democracy in Texas and beyond.
A spokesperson for Obama verified the meeting, noting that he admires their fight against Republican attempts to implement gerrymandering in Texas, particularly leading up to the midterm elections.
According to Obama’s team, the Democrats are alarmed about their future and are striving to adopt effective strategies in response.
Meanwhile, Texas Republicans are at odds with the Democrats over proposed changes to district layouts which could potentially grant the GOP five more seats. Over 50 Democratic lawmakers from Texas left the state to prevent a quorum for voting on the bill.
In a bid to compel these lawmakers to return, Republican leaders in Texas have threatened legal action, even suggesting they might step down if participation in the legislative process isn’t realized.
The Texas House Democrats released a statement announcing they would return only if Congress agreed to delay voting without a new meeting plan or if California pursued its own district changes to counterbalance the GOP gains in Texas.
Obama has criticized the push for redistricting in Texas as a move that undermines democracy.
Previously, he voiced his support for Texas Democrats, highlighting the severity of the situation where Republicans are manipulating district lines to unfairly secure additional seats in the upcoming elections.
Senator Wu shared with ABC News how excited they were to have Obama’s support through this Zoom meeting, remarking that it affirmed the unity among Democrats in protecting voting rights. He indicated that the meeting’s setting was necessitated by what he termed “GOP threats.”
In response to Texas’s plans, California’s Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom, on Thursday, announced his own initiatives to counteract the district changes backed by Trump.
This announcement prompted reactions from Texas Senator Ted Cruz, who countered that Texas should also eliminate Democratic districts if California were to proceed with such changes.
