Barbara Barrie, Oscar-nominated actress from 'Barney Miller,' has passed away at 95.

Barbara Barrie, the beloved actress known for her role as Hal Linden’s wife on “Barney Miller,” has passed away at the age of 95. A report indicates that her death, which occurred at her home in New York City, was medically assisted due to a terminal cancer diagnosis, as revealed by her daughter.

Barrie enjoyed a lengthy career in both television and film, starting in the 1950s and continuing up until last year. She gained notoriety for her performances not only in “Barney Miller,” which aired from 1975 to 1982, but also as the grandmother to Brooke Shields on “Suddenly Susan.” Her portrayal in the 1979 film “Breaking Away” earned her an Academy Award nomination. Interestingly, she lost the Oscar to Meryl Streep for her role in “Kramer vs. Kramer.” Moreover, Barrie was recognized as Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival for her performance in the 1964 film “One Potato, Two Potato.”

In 1980, she notably played Goldie Hawn’s mother in “Private Benjamin.” Barrie was not solely a film actress; she had an impressive presence on Broadway, where she earned a Tony nomination for her role in the original 1970 cast of Stephen Sondheim’s “Company.” She made her Broadway debut in “The Wooden Dish” back in 1955 after relocating to New York, a move she partially attributed to a boyfriend at the time. She once shared, “I figured I might as well try to act,” reflecting on her shift into performance art after embarking on that life change.

In a conversation in 2024, Barrie remarked on her long journey in acting, stating, “I think it took 45 years to become a good actor.” She highlighted the importance of peeling away layers to connect deeply with the characters she portrayed.
