James Brolin was single in the ’90s before marrying Barbra Streisand.
In a joint interview with CBS Morning, Brolin, 83, told host Gayle King why she decided to remain single for three years.
“I was abstinent for three years, which is literally a wild word, and I said, ‘Who needs this?'” Brolin said.
Streisand, 81, playfully tapped her husband on the knee and interjected, “You shouldn’t have said that.”

“Three years?” King asked Brolin.
“I had no interest in getting involved in a bad situation,” he explained.
“It’s been three years, hasn’t it been a hellish night?” Gail joked, to which James replied, “It’s been wild,” as he and his wife shared a laugh.
Brolin was married to Jan Smithers for nearly 10 years before deciding not to have an intimate relationship, and their marriage ended in 1995. James and Barbra married in 1998 and celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in July.
Brolin wrote Streisand a letter congratulating him on their remarkable accomplishment.
“Marrying you was the best thing that ever happened to me,” Brolin wrote in a letter shared with the outlet. “I asked you three times.”

“Did you ask her three times?” asked King.
“I did. She wasn’t sure about the idea, at least three times,” Brolin said.
When Gale asked Streisand why she didn’t marry Brolin right away, she replied, “I don’t know. I need to try it first. At least two years.”
Prior to her marriage to James, Streisand was married to Elliott Gould from 1963 to 1971.
King continued reading Brolin’s love letters.
“Home isn’t a place, it’s a person. If you like being around someone all the time, you know that person is right for you,” he wrote. “And when I go, when I finally go, I will love you.”

“I think the real reason our relationship has lasted so long is because we are both willing to put in the effort,” Streisand wrote, according to the outlet. “Jim and I are completely different. He said to me, ‘You’re an expert at finding what’s wrong, and I’m just happy to get up in the morning.’ He will live much longer than me. He kept saying he would live to be 100 years old, and he recently lived to be 110 years old. With that attitude, he will probably live.”
