Naked Boy Escapes Disturbing Conditions in Pennsylvania
A young boy in Pennsylvania bravely fled from a home where he had been confined, often in a room filled with filth, after the arrest of three of his guardians.
On Friday morning around 7:30 a.m., a 5-year-old boy was discovered wandering naked in the street near his home in Swatara Township, according to Pennsylvania State Police.
Good Samaritans came to his aid, finding him wrapped only in a urine-stained green blanket. They stayed with him until paramedics arrived and transported him to a local hospital for evaluation, as reported by WGAL.
Details on how exactly the boy managed to escape remain unclear.
Upon investigating, police found the conditions inside the house to be horrifying, as the child had come from a decaying home located a few blocks away.
The police report indicated that upon entry, officers encountered “trash strewn about, hundreds of flies, and clutter that severely restricted movement within the house.”
In what was identified as the boy’s bedroom, police found a baby gate on the door along with zip ties, duct tape, and a wooden board that had holes drilled to prevent his escape.
The walls and windows were smeared with feces, and the beds were in disarray, covered with remnants of food.
Scattered around the room were toys and trash.
WGAL noted that officers learned the boy was typically confined to this boarded-up room, where he received granola bars, cereal, and drinks through a slot in the baby gate about 90% of the time.
The boy’s guardians—Tucker Heagy, 20; Jade Shuey, 21; and Stephanie Schaffner, 42—bathed him only once a week, and cleaning efforts could take over a week.
While their exact relationship to the boy wasn’t disclosed, Shuey informed police that at times he could spend up to three days locked in the room without being let out, forcing him to relieve himself inside.
Heagy reportedly admitted that freeing the boy from his confinement involved cutting multiple zip ties on the gate, only to replace them immediately. They had purchased these fasteners in bulk from local stores, which were utilized extensively throughout the house.
Due to the appalling conditions, the house was ultimately condemned by local law enforcement.
All three guardians were arrested and face charges related to child endangerment, according to police.
