She’s really diving in.
TLC’s upcoming reality show “Suddenly Amish,” which airs Tuesday, January 13 at 10 p.m., features six individuals from the mainstream world immersing themselves in an Amish community. For 44-year-old Billie Joe, this was a dream come true.
“I’ve always been fascinated by the Amish way of life since I was young,” she shared.
“I’d encounter the Amish at farmers markets, and it sparked my curiosity. Over time, I learned more about how they live and admired the sense of peace that seemed to surround their lifestyle. I knew that’s the life I wanted.”
Previously, Billie Joe was a barista in Ithaca, New York, though she didn’t reveal if she has maintained that job or embraced the Amish community fully, as she wanted to avoid spoilers for the show.
“Most people in my life don’t share that desire,” she explained. “I felt a bit out of place among my friends and family. They were often puzzled, asking, ‘Why would you want to be Amish?'”
For Billie Joe, the attraction lies in the faith-centered community filled with love and support. “I just felt compelled to be part of that.”
The series tracks Billie Joe and her five companions as they leave their “English” lives—what the Amish term for outsiders—and step into the Amish world in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Typically, Amish youth experience “Rumspringa,” a period to explore the outside world, but the community remains largely closed off to newcomers.
Recently, platforms like TikTok and Instagram have seen a rise in “trad wife” influencers promoting a more “traditional” lifestyle. Billie Joe stated, however, that this trend didn’t influence her wish to join the Amish.
“I’ve wanted this for years, long before Instagram. While it might sound odd, I’ve been collecting buggy wheels and quilts for around 20 years. This has been on my mind far longer than social media.”
She considers herself “a different breed,” noting that she hasn’t come across anyone quite like herself.
On the show, Billie Joe and her companions must adjust to life without modern conveniences like electricity, technology, and even cosmetics, facing unexpected challenges, such as using an outhouse rather than a traditional bathroom.
“I’m constantly learning new things. I know about Amish dress and the importance of modesty. But there are surprises in Amish life, and I’m navigating them as I go.”
In the premiere episode, Billie Joe faced a rather unpleasant surprise when she was led to an outhouse for her bathroom needs.
“I’m not sure what I was expecting, but it definitely wasn’t that!”
She mentioned that adapting to life without air conditioning proved to be the biggest challenge.
“I’m not your average person. I rely heavily on air conditioning,” she admitted.
“Adjusting to how my body functioned in the heat without it was tricky. I knew there wouldn’t be electricity, but I still thought, ‘I can handle this.'”
“There were definitely moments when I questioned how I ended up here. Amish life isn’t for everyone,” she remarked.
