Barry Diller backs Andrew Cuomo’s bid for NYC mayor

Media mogul Barry Diller threw his support behind New York Governor Andrew Cuomo's New York City mayor's bid.

A longtime democratic donor, Diller revealed his position at an off-record meeting with staff at IAC, the digital media company he chairs. His remarks Captured with recordings obtained by Semafor.

“I'm in favor of him because I'm grateful,” Diller said. He mentioned Cuomo's support in the creation of Little Island, a Manhattan park, which was funded by Diller and his wife, fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg.

The famous project transformed the old pier into an impressive green space on the Hudson River, and Cuomo played a role in surviving bureaucratic obstacles to make it happen.

“New York City is at stake – public safety, affordability, leadership crisis – and we are grateful for the support and confidence of Governor Cuomo as he fights to save our city for future generations,” a Cuomo spokesman told the Post.

Diller further supported him, saying, “I think he'll be a very good mayor of New York. I don't think so. [current mayor Eric] Adams should survive politically or survive. ”

Diller also revealed his dissatisfaction with the Democratic Party's current situation and denounced Dem for his “pathetic and unhappy” reaction to President Trump's speech last week.

For many years, Diller has been an active political donor who primarily supports Democratic candidates.

In Trump's recent speech to Congress, Democrats expressed their dissent through various actions, including showing signs of protest, walking, hackling and more.

“The Democrats are completely confused. There's no leadership,” Diller said. He added, “These things have to get worse before they get better.”

Cuomo announced last week that it will compete in the democratic mayoral primary, scheduled for June 24th.

Polls show that if the vote was held today, Cuomo will likely become a huge favorite among the fields that include Adams. Current and Old City Directors, Bradlander and Scott Stringer. Zoran Mamdani, a member of the New York State Senator. Senator Jessica Ramos and others.

Facing criticism of crime rates and city management, Adams could be vulnerable to well-known challengers.

His tenure has also been undermined by legal issues, including a federal investigation into the funding practices of his campaign and allegations of relationships with illegal foreign donors.

Cuomo's return to politics comes after his dramatic resignation as governor in 2021 amid multiple scandals that included allegations of sexual harassment and criticism of handling Covid-19-related nursing home deaths.

Cuomo, once a dominant figure in New York politics, initially maintained strong democratic support, but his departure caused him to injure him politically.

Since then, he has been working on rehabilitating his public image.
