Barry Diller reveals he is gay following his marriage to Diane von Furstenberg.

Barry Diller, who has been married to designer Diane von Furstenberg since 2001, is now openly discussing his past relationship with a man for the first time.

In an essay published by New York magazine, Diller shared, “There were many men in my life, but only one woman. She didn’t come into my life until I was 33.” The 83-year-old billionaire reflected on his experiences and feelings regarding sexuality, noting that he had never doubted his sexuality’s significant impact on his life, although he felt fear about others’ reactions.

Diller recounted how he first met von Furstenberg in 1974, stating he felt no uncertainty about heterosexuality’s inherent strength. When their relationship blossomed, his initial reaction was simply, “who knew it?”

The couple had a tumultuous history, parting ways for years before ultimately marrying in 2001. While they do not have biological children together, von Furstenberg has two adult children, Alexander and Tatiana, from her prior marriage.

Diller explained that his connection with Diane has often led to confusion and speculation. He described their relationship as an extraordinary miracle in his life, saying it began with indifference and unexpectedly evolved into romance. “It was a simple explosion of passion,” he remarked, adding that even though he was attracted to men, it didn’t conflict with his love for Diane.

Expressing a belief in their destined connection, he discussed the modern understanding of sexual identity, perceiving it as more fluid than the strict notions of the past.

After Diller’s candid revelations, the present status of their relationship remains somewhat uncertain, though neither has filed for divorce. In a past interview, Diane reflected on Barry’s unconditional love over their years together, mentioning how other partners tended to feel overshadowed by him.

Finally, she pointed out that their unconventional relationship dynamic suits them, emphasizing, “In the end, he got me and I’m happy he got me.” She also noted that they may someday share a place in town, maintaining her autonomy in their life choices.
