Joint Base Charleston to be Renamed in Honor of Senator Lindsey Graham

Joint Base Charleston in South Carolina will be renamed to honor the late Senator Lindsey Graham, as announced by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, referencing the Pentagon.

On Tuesday, Leavitt made a post on X, sharing information from The Post and Courier, which initially reported on the renaming, citing an internal memo.

Secretary of the U.S. Air Force, Troy Meink, indicated in a letter on Monday that the base would now be known as Joint Base Lindsey Graham. He highlighted Graham’s years of military service and his advocacy efforts, according to the newspaper.

“Senator Graham’s lifelong devotion to the military was shaped by his own military service and his public service in both the United States Senate and the United States House of Representatives,” Meink noted.

He also mentioned that Graham’s strong advocacy played a vital role in modernizing military infrastructure and enhancing aviation security, contributing to Joint Base Charleston’s status as a leading military installation in America.

Graham passed away on July 11 due to a tear in the wall of his aorta shortly after returning from a trip to Ukraine, as reported by the medical examiner. Family and friends believe his work ethic and demanding schedule contributed to his passing.

He served as a U.S. senator for over two decades, representing South Carolina’s interests in Congress. Additionally, Graham had more than 30 years of service in the U.S. Air Force and Air Force Reserves, as well as time in the South Carolina Air National Guard.

“We remember and honor the life of Senator Lindsey Graham—Airman, leader, and public servant. He answered the nation’s call in uniform, building a career of over 30 years in the Air Force as a military attorney, alongside his lengthy service in Congress,” Meink expressed on social media shortly after Graham’s death.
