Baseball fans mock Netflix's score display during Yankees-Giants Opening Night

MLB Opening Game Draws Mixed Reactions

The MLB’s opening game kicked off with quite a stir, though not exactly for the right reasons.

Fans were greeted with a cable car and two taxis on the field at Oracle Park as the lineups for the Yankees and Giants were revealed.

The broadcast team featured notables like Barry Bonds, CC Sabathia, and Jameis Winston, among others.

However, a new scoring display drew widespread criticism online.

One viewer commented, “I thought the score bug couldn’t get worse than the Bally Sports version.” They went on to say, “I may have to reconsider that now.”

A significant issue noted was the text size—specifically, the names of the batter and pitcher were deemed too small.

Another user remarked, “I appreciate the style and idea, but the text size is surprisingly tiny. It’s the smallest I’ve ever seen for a sports score display.”

“This scoring bug has me squinting,” another viewer added, echoing the frustration.

But grievances didn’t stop there.

One individual mentioned how a backdrop for an Adobe ad behind home plate made it look like the batter had been awkwardly added to the scene.

Additionally, users felt the game looked lackluster, with one saying it appeared as if a monsoon was occurring.

The broadcast’s personnel also faced some ridicule. Beyond Bonds, Winston, and Sabathia, notable figures included former MLB players like Hunter Pence and Albert Pujols, along with WWE star John Cena, who explained the new ABS challenge system, and comedian Bert Kreischer.

“Netflix’s MLB Opening Night was disappointing. We really didn’t need Jameis Winston or John Cena there,” one viewer remarked, referring to the involvement of celebrities outside the baseball community.

Winston, in particular, attracted attention for his unusual antics. The NFL quarterback humorously took a stance reminiscent of a crab while demonstrating corner plays and even served hot dogs to Yankees players after the game.

Some viewers weren’t impressed with this approach.

“Netflix made me dislike Jameis Winston!” declared one. “I wish he would just quit!”

Despite the hubbub, the Yankees secured a solid 7-0 victory against the Giants, powered by a five-run second inning.

Aaron Judge had a tough night, going 0-for-5 with four strikeouts, marking his first golden sombrero since 2024, but every other Yankees batter managed to hit.

Pitcher Fried contributed with 6 1/3 innings of shutout ball, providing a boost to the Yankees’ struggling rotation.

While 22 other teams are set to make their season debuts on Thursday, both the Yankees and Giants will enjoy a break.

At least, they won’t have to play it on Netflix.
